Tasting notes
Château Sociando-Mallet is quite the distinct gem in Bordeaux. Jean Gautreau breathed new life into it in the 1970s, and since then, it has carved its own niche. It's a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, giving it a strong backbone, while Merlot smooths it out. This is one of those Bordeaux wines you just have to try at least once.
In the 7th volume, this wine makes its appearance. It's set against the legendary Château Lafite Rothschild, making quite a statement. It's like one of those wines that doesn't scream for attention but once tasted, reveals an impressive depth and character.
Take a look at its color—aged to a point where the rim is slightly orange. The nose is wonderfully complex with hints of tea, sous-bois, and dried herbs. On the palate, it opens up with rich black cherry flavors. The acidity is smooth yet present, and the tannins are velvety. This kind of depth comes from 41 years of aging.
The finish is long, leaving a subtle smokiness. Decant it and savor slowly. With all that history in a single glass, it's something to truly appreciate.
