Tasting notes
"Psi," crafted by Peter Sisseck at Dominio de Pingus, is a red wine from Spain's Ribera del Duero. This 2009 vintage is said to use Tempranillo grapes among others, although the exact varietals aren't specified. The region's intense sunlight and diurnal temperature variation are known to produce wines with remarkable fruit concentration.
In volume 36, H.A sends this wine to the wine department, where it's presented alongside Wassily Kandinsky's "Composition II." The flowing river between classical and modern art in the painting is akin to a similar flow within the wine itself. Just like Kandinsky, the father of abstract painting, this wine is more than just a red; it's got something special going on.
Pouring it into a glass, you see a deep garnet color with a hint of orange at the rim, indicating some maturity. On the nose, you get rich aromas of blackberry and cherry, interwoven with toasted notes and a touch of spice. The palate is greeted by a lush fruit sweetness followed by a smooth acidity that ties everything together.
The tannins here are velvety, providing a pleasant and lingering finish. There's complexity, but it’s beautifully balanced, revealing something new with each sip. It's wise to decant Psi for a bit before enjoying it, letting its full character unfold.
