Letter from Yutaka Kanzaki
This wine is an 'encounter'. An encounter always brings excitement and dynamism. People cannot change or find new paths without meeting others. However, when that encounter is with someone of the opposite sex, one might harbor unfulfilled desires, content with merely gazing from afar. A moment of thrill, a profile that embodies strength, gentleness, intensity, tranquility, a sharp self-respect, and graceful femininity—I understand it. You crave kindness. Yet, the kindness you seek is beyond my reach at present. Ah, beautiful person. Your smile, which intoxicates those who behold it, is sweet and bittersweet. Though modest, you stand tall with dignity, looking straight into the eyes, possessing within you a beast-like eros and a saintly purity. You are always moving forward, never pausing, aiming for something. The reason I cannot grasp what that is, is because I am still immature, and it is not your fault. For you live amidst the sun, the earth, and the wind. With golden hair fluttering in the breeze, you are brimming with confidence, looking back at me. 'Follow me, if you can.' This wine is a woman and a tree. A solitary tree standing in a vast meadow, always swaying in the wind. The leaves, rustling and swaying in the breeze, shimmer under the pouring sun. This tree silently embraces all of me. Ah, the moments of youth, the wine that captivated me. You were there if I reached out my hand, yet you were the 'Madonna' in a portrait that could never be reached.
Tasting notes
You know Jacques Selosse, right? Their Cuvée Exquise Champagne is something else, really showcasing their passion for Chardonnay. It's a sparkling wine from the Champagne region that honors tradition while also bringing a fresh twist to the table.
This special cuvée makes its appearance in volume 27, and it fits right into the dramatic scenes of that chapter. The elegance and complexity of this champagne mirror the tension and anticipation depicted in the manga, making it feel like the perfect choice for that moment.
When you pour a glass, those fine bubbles catch your eye first, like tiny jewels dancing in the light. The nose is all about fresh citrus aromas with a hint of toasted bread. Once you take a sip, you're hit with this sharp, lively acidity that spreads across your palate, followed by rich fruitiness that just makes you smile. The subtle bitterness at the end lingers beautifully, offering a long, satisfying finish.
This champagne is all about the balance of fine bubbles and complex flavors, making it just right for a special occasion toast. Chill it a bit and enjoy it in a medium-sized glass to really make the most of its elegance.
