Tasting notes
Château Pape Clément is one of those grand old estates in Bordeaux, crafting wine with a legacy that stretches back centuries. With Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot at its core, the 1986 vintage is something special. Opening a bottle like this feels like stepping back in time, you know?
In Volume 16, this very 1986 vintage was offered by Itsuse to Miyabi, described like a luxurious Persian rug. But, also, Shizuku and Laurent tasted a bottle that had seen better days—like a worn-out carpet. It highlights just how much the condition of the wine can matter.
When you pour it, you'll notice the bright brick color. The aroma hits you with a complex mix of tea leaves and dried herbs, with cassis and plum fruit notes gracefully rising as it breathes. On the palate, there's this gentle, rounded acidity that envelopes you, with hints of underbrush and tobacco weaving in. The tannins have mellowed, providing a velvety texture.
The finish is long, leaving a smoky, intriguing mystery behind. I'd suggest a bit of decanting to really bring out its charm. It's like tasting a piece of Bordeaux history from 1986, and you should definitely give it a try.
